General
--------

Installation
-------------
Now Utilities™ 5.0 is a “fat binary” product, meaning that it will run correctly whether installed on a Power Macintosh or an earlier model. You can use a startup drive with Now Utilities installed to start any Macintosh (assuming it contains appropriate system software for that model). You need never worry that Now Utilities will crash during startup because it was installed for the wrong type of Macintosh.
When your Macintosh is running system software that supports drag-and-drop functions but didn’t come with the Macintosh Drag and Drop extension (such as System 7.1.2 or System 7 Pro), the Now Utilities installer places that extension in your Extensions folder. However, it’s not needed if you’re running System 7.5, since the extension is built into that version of the system software.
Now Menus™
-------------
System 7.5 users: Please note that you can’t drag items from PowerTalk catalogs or mail enclosures directly into Custom Menus created with Now Menus. These items don’t actually exist as files at that point; they’re contained internally within the PowerTalk data structures. Move them to the desktop before dragging them into Custom Menus.
PopChar users: If you have “Menus ‘stick’ when pulled down” and “No click needed” selected in the Preferences dialog box, you may move the pointer into a corner of the menu bar to pull down a Custom Menu and find that the PopChar “window” pops up when you don’t want it to. If this happens, you can make the window disappear by clicking anywhere on the desktop or in the current application window.
Be aware that if Now Super Boomerang isn’t running, the pop-up menus in the Now Menus control panel won’t list recent folders, documents or applications — Now Menus relies on Now Super Boomerang for these lists. You can, however, use the “Other…” command in any of these pop-up menus to add the desired item.
Microsoft Word™, Microsoft Excel™ and Aldus Freehand™ 4.0 prevent Now Menus from customizing menu fonts and adding custom Hot Keys directly in menus. Now Menus doesn’t conflict with these applications or others with nonstandard menu definitions — you just don’t have the ability to customize their menus.
Now QuickFiler™
------------------
The Now Find™ function of Now QuickFiler lists a maximum of 2500 found items. If there are more than 2500 items matching your search criteria, Now QuickFiler will beep and inform you. You’ll need to narrow your search criteria at this point.
Now QuickFiler Extension must load before the File Sharing Extension. They’ll normally load in this order anyway, but you can create a Link in Now Startup Manager to ensure that this always happens.
DiskLock™ users: depending on your use of that product, you may encounter incompatibilities with Now QuickFiler. Contact Symantec for further assistance. Other security products work fine with Now Utilities.
If transparent compression is turned on and you’ve selected the “Change icons of compressed files” checkbox in the Compress Options pane of the control panel, you may notice a small delay when opening windows for folders containing several items.
On Location™ may have difficulties if it loads after Now QuickFiler at startup. You may want to create a Link in Now Startup Manager to specify that On Location will always load before Now QuickFiler.
It’s possible to run into problems when trying to convert DiskDoubler™ files to Now QuickFiler format using the “Convert…” command or button — there’s no risk of file damage, but in some situations you may see an alert that the operation couldn’t be completed. If this occurs, the best approach is to expand your DiskDoubler files, then compress or archive them as necessary using Now QuickFiler.
If you have transparent compression set to occur during idle time on your Macintosh and you also have a screen saver running, your Macintosh may take a little longer than expected to “wake up” when you press a key or move the mouse. If Now QuickFiler has been compressing files during this time, it takes a moment to “save its place” in the process before making the Macintosh available again.
Now Save™
------------
While you can add the “Now Save…” command to any application’s File menu in order to open the Now Save Configure dialog box from within the application, adding it in applications with nonstandard menu definitions may cause problems — Microsoft Word and Excel are two such applications in which you shouldn’t select this option. Instead, use the “Configure dialog Hot Key” (set in the Preferences dialog box) to accomplish the same thing.
Now Startup Manager™
------------------------
The first time you restart after installing Now Utilities, your Macintosh will automatically restart once more by itself. This occurs so that Now Startup Manager can control your system configuration completely, including items that load before Now Toolbox. If, during the startup process, you subsequently change the status of an item that appears above the upper dotted line in the Now Startup Manager control panel (indicating that it loads before Now Toolbox), you’ll notice the same behavior. This double-restart also occurs during automatic Conflict Isolation, when diagnosing items that load before Now Toolbox. Don’t worry — it’s perfectly normal.
Note: if you use the “Exclude…” capability inside the Extension Display Preferences dialog box to prevent items from appearing in the control panel list, be aware that Now Startup Manager treats excluded items as though they’re part of your system software. As such, they won’t be individually identified during the automatic Conflict Isolation process.
When you upgrade from Now Startup Manager 4.0.2 to version 5.0, any Links that you had set up in the previous version are preserved (along with your preferences and Sets, etc.), plus in any Links that included Now Utilities components, the 4.0 names are updated to the version 5.0 names.
When you’re using automatic Conflict Isolation and the dialog box appears asking you if the last test passed or failed, instead of clicking the buttons you can press the “P” key for “Passed,” the “F” key for “Failed,” or the “Enter” or “R” key for “Retry.”
Suitcase™ or MasterJuggler™ users: When you set Now Startup Manager to display fonts, it will display only those fonts located in the Fonts folder under System 7.0.1 or 7.1 — if you’re using a font management utility to control other fonts not located in the Fonts folder, Now Startup Manager doesn’t interfere with them.
In the Now Startup Manager control panel, when you select an item above the first dotted line (indicating that it loads before Now Toolbox and Now Startup Manager during startup), Now Startup Manager will show a memory requirement of “None” — Now Startup Manager can’t determine the memory requirements of items that load before it.
Now Super Boomerang™

When you open a directory dialog box (Open/Save As), you may notice that it takes a little while to appear at first. This delay occurs as Now Super Boomerang determines the last file you opened and makes sure that file is selected when the dialog box opens. To avoid this delay, deselect the “Rebound to last file” checkbox in the Now Super Boomerang Preferences dialog box. (Remember that while other software supports rebounding to the last folder, Now Super Boomerang is unique in providing the “last file” capability.)
Be aware Now Menus relies on Now Super Boomerang to provide the contents of the pop-up menus in the Now Menus control panel that list recent folders, documents or applications; if Now Super Boomerang isn’t running at startup, these pop-up menus will be empty.
Now WYSIWYG Menus™

Adobe Illustrator users: Because of nonstandard menu definitions, Now WYSIWYG Menus can’t display enhanced font menus in Adobe Illustrator; the application is excluded from Now WYSIWYG Menus functions by default to avoid any conflicts.
